Barefoot shoes fit differently on purpose. Ten minutes here beats a week of return labels.
Stand on a sheet of paper with your heel against a wall, mark the tip of the longest toe — which is not always the big one — and measure the distance in centimeters. Do it in the evening, when feet are at their largest, and do it for both feet: a difference of half a size between left and right is completely ordinary, and the larger foot is the one that picks the size.
A barefoot shoe should give your longest toe roughly a thumb’s width — about 1 cm — of space at the front while standing. That gap is not slack; it is where the foot lengthens as it takes your weight and pushes off. Fit a barefoot shoe like a dress shoe and you cancel the whole point of the toe box.

The forefoot is generous on every last we build, so genuinely wide feet usually stay at their normal length. The tighter spot is the instep: if the top of your foot is high, favor lace-up styles over slip-ons and Mary Janes, since laces let you open the throat of the shoe and slip-ons do not.
Thin liner socks and bare feet fit the same. Cushioned winter socks and toe socks add real millimeters, and a shoe that is perfect in August can be tight in January — if you plan to wear thick socks daily, take the larger half size.
Measure children every couple of months and allow a full centimeter of growth room. A barefoot shoe that is slightly long does no harm because the sole is flat and flexible; one that is short undoes exactly what it was bought to protect.
